Even More Details on Saturday Morning Rides: The Saturday bicyclists meet at the parking lot between North Shore Pool and the baseball field to the south of the pool. If that parking lot is blocked off due to a major downtown event, bicyclists meet at the parking lot to the east of that lot or at the parking lot to the north of the pool.
If those three parking lots are blocked off, Saturday bicyclists meet at the intersection of Second Street S and Sixth Avenue S. Please, park in the street and not in the USF parking lots.
How to fit into the Saturday morning ride:
Saturday morning is the best time to ride with us for the first time. That is when we have the most ride choices available. Bicyclists start arriving at about 8:00 a.m., break into groups depending upon their abilities, and take off riding SHARP at 8:30 a.m.
If you've never ridden in a group before or you're slower, just walk up to someone and ask for the slowest group. The person will direct you to Gib's Ride (6-12 mph) and the Daisy Pickers (14-16 mph).
Gib's Ride and the Daisy Pickers start off together at the Gib's Ride speed. This gives new riders a chance to see if they like the Gib's Ride speed or if they can go faster. At a certain point, the Daisy Pickers pick up their speed and leave Gib's Ride behind. Gib's Ride will not leave any riders behind and, often, has a sweep. A sweep is the person who stays behind with people who can't keep up or go the whole distance, yet. The sweep stays back with slower people and helps them get back to their cars or to the restaurant.
The Controlled 18s go 16-18 mph and people aren't dropped from this group.
If you are very experienced at techniques for riding in fast groups, you'll probably be able to fit in with the Uncontroled 18s and faster riders. Warning: the Uncontroled 18s have been clocked doing as high as 27 mph. Bring a map just in case they drop you. If you are concerned about the possibility of being left behind, ride with Gib's Ride, the Daisy Pickers, or the Controled 18s.
Most rides end about 10:00 a.m. Then, those bicyclists, who so desire, go together to various downtown restaurants for a late breakfast and conversation. Any bicyclists and their family members are welcome to join us.
