Overview / What to expect

SPBC offers a wide variety of rides for cyclists of all levels of ability. Whether you want a casual tour through Snell Isle or the challenge of the Ft. De Soto, or even a brisk ride to Clearwater Beach and back, we have something to suit you.

Everyone is welcome on a SPBC ride, regardless of whether you are a current member. Of course, we hope that after ride with us, you will want to help keep the club rolling!

Our Saturday 8:30 AM rides offer the most variety for speed, route and distance. We recommend starting on a Saturday ride for these reasons.

Beginning at 8:30 AM, our rides are called out, usually via a bullhorn, from fastest to 18. Along with the ride speed, we will call North rides and South rides. The direction indicates the general direction the ride will travel, the number is speed. For example, a ride for "22 South" will travel from the Pool, South, to Pinellas Pointe and back, at around 22 MPH. A "22 North" ride will ride from the Pool, North to Weedon Island, at around 22MPH.

The bullhorn-wielding ride caller doesn't call out the three slowest rides.  Instead, the Gib's Ride, Casual 16s, and Charlie's Ride gather at the western end of the parking lot and leave at 8:30 AM on their own special routes.

If this is your first ride with SPBC, we suggest that you start at a level of difficulty that is slower than what you think you can handle for a sustained period and with the Casual 16s or Charlie's Ride.  The riders in these two groups will help you learn road laws, safe bicycling techniques, and group riding skills so you can fit in easily with the 18 and faster groups. You can always move up to a more difficult class on a later day. We want you to enjoy your rides with SPBC and also get better.

Ride Speeds

Our Saturday 8:30 rides can serve as a guide to other rides in general. Follow the ride links above for more details on each ride. Check out the details for each daily ride on your left.

Note the new Beginner Bicycle Ride that starts at 9:30 AM and lasts 30 minutes.

My first instinct is to suggest you try a slower ride till you know the route, however, some of our rides do jump and drop riders. (apologies)

There are Ft. Desoto rides on Saturday - ask around and be sure you are in the right group - There is a faster and a slower group, still you will need to maintain 20mph.

I recently traveled to St. Pete/Treasure Island, FL on Vacation from Atlanta. I wrote to one of the St. Pete club organizers about their rides and what I was looking for and he quickly responded (thanks Steve). I joined four of these organized rides and I'm glad I did. This was a great group of accomplished/experienced riders who welcomed me right in. The routes and scenery were great too! Thanks. you all have a great club!
