Topic : Treasure Island Riders?

Hi Marc!

I just joined the club and saw your post here. I live in Causeway Isles on the St. Pete side of the T.I. drawbridge. I try to ride a couple times a week from my home to St. Pete Beach or Pass-a-grille. I'd love to have some company! I haven't ridden downtown yet but would love to do that as well.  Please reply and let's ride!

Tim

Topic : Riding to the Saturday club rides

I did my first club ride yesterday, 8/28/10. Had a terrific ride with the 18-20 North group!! On my drive to North Shore from Treasure Island I noticed several small groups of riders riding down 1st Ave. S. I don't know if they were riding to North Shore for the club rides. Anyway, I'm intending to start riding to the ride start rather than drive and was wondering if there's anyone that rides down to North Shore from T.I. or along that route that I could hook up with. It'd be a nice way to warm up and meet new people!

Topic : Looking for Bike Shop Recommendations

Thanks for the many emails I've received regarding LBS's.  I've since purchased a Specialized Secteur Elite from Action Wheelsport on 66th St. just a block south of 54th Av. N.  Bill was excellent to work with on my wants and needs and JJ, the technician, did an outstanding job fitting me to the bike. He asked lots of questions about my riding style, distances, speeds, etc.  The fitting process took over an hour with lots of measurements.  The bike is so comfortable, except for the stock seat, which I'll be replacing as soon as I can build up the funds. : )  I've only been able to do two 26 mile rides due to weather and college kid move-in, but I stare at it all day and admire it's lines. I'm very happy with it.

Thanks again for all the input! I look forward to getting out on some club rides!

Tim

Hello everyone!

I have an Orbea Onix 2006 for sale. If you are interested, the pictures are here:

http://picasaweb.google.com/Jitendra.Khare/OrbeaOnix?feat=directlink#

The bike is in good condition...I am selling because I recently purchased a TT bike. Frankly, I have not done research on the fair price but we can chat about it.

I usually attend the Tue & Thu 5 pm rides if you need more info. Also, I live in the Old Northeast if you'd like to stop by before or after the club rides.

Thanks!

Topic : Looking for Bike Shop Recommendations

Hi, I'm ready to buy a new road bike after 14 years of riding a Cannondale hybrid. I've visited a few LBS's (ABC Bikes, ChainwheelDrive, Revolution bikes) and would like to know if there are others that would be worth my checking out.  I've googled local shops but not all have a website to see what they carry. So I'm hoping folks here will clue me into other good shops that carry quality road bikes.  Please email: trobinson017@gmail.com

Thanks!

Tim

Helllo.  I am staying at the Carillon Park Hilton through Sat morning  and would like to get out on my bike while in town.  Are there any rides that pass close by this area or  are there any routes that I could  get to from my location?

Thanks,

I think the most difficult and dangerous areas will be riding through
Tampa near the airport and west of downtown, and then in the Brandon
area. You may want to take alternative routes around those areas.
East of Brandon and through the central part of the state SR 60 is ok,
but it does have high speed traffic on it. I am not familer with the
road conditions east of the Turnpike.

Hi.  I'm planning to start doing century rides once a month and am looking for people who might be interested in joining me.  Haven't decided if they'll be on Sat or Sun but am leaning toward Sun.

Any takers?

Hi All,

Showed up this morning (Saturday the 9th) and no one was there!  Do we cancel rides when it's too cold?  I came last week and it wasn't a whole LOT warmer then vs. this week.  I am just wondering if there is somewhere on the website that posts whether group rides will be cancelled or not due to inclement weather.

PS: If you throw enough layers on, the weather's fine!

Happy New Year,

I, being a merchant mariner, have recently received a call that sets the ball in motion for my return to work.  However, it is my understanding at this moment that I will only be deployed from January 7th through February 15th.  I will be looking to hone my cycling legs once I return, so I will eventually make it south to St. Pete for another ride with your fine club. At that time I will bring the DVD for Mrs. Vosburgh with me.

Val, the owner of Outspokin Bicycles, at 2241 Gulf to Bay Blvd., in Clearwater, is hosting a customer appreciation event from 4-7 PM on Saturday, January 2nd at her beautiful, new modern shop.  Free beer and munchies will be served.  She invited Rosie and me to a book signing for our new book, "From Broken Neck to Broken Records, a Master's Cyclist's Guide to Winning."  I hope some of you can find time to stop by and say hello.

Happy Holidays!

During my first ride with the S.P.B.C. I ran into Carol Jean Vosburgh.  Although I did not personally know her I recognized her from a DVD I have.

In 2008, at the Withlacoochee Clean Air Ride, Carol Jean and I were both interviewed (separately) by race promoter Chris Moling.  The interviewed was filmed by gentleman named Roy, who I have since befriended.  The interview was to be aired on a local cable network in north/central Florida, so there was no possible way that I could tune in and watch it.  So Roy offered me a copy of the interview on DVD.

I told Carol Jean that I had a copy of it, but due to my purchasing a home, most of my belongings were packed up (i.e. my computers etc...). I did mention that over the holidays I could get a copy burned for her.

Well, if anyone knows how to get in touch with her, please inform her that the copy has been made and that she can get in touch with me via CProgression@yahoo.com and I will bring it with me to an upcoming ride. It will be in a standard DVD case - since it DOES fit into my jersey pocket - If she rides to the ride, I recommend that she checks to see if a standard case will fit into her jersey pocket as well.

Thanks,

CJ Smith

Justin:

The Florida cycling calendar is absolutely full with every type of race from time trials, track racing, cyclocross, moutain biking, etc.  A full schedule and results can be found at www.floridacycling.com.  These are USCF sanctioned events which require buying a license from USA Cycling - $60 a year.  For those over 50, there is a full calendar of senior games events throughout the year culminating in the state championships the second week in December.

I can steer you towards some good events.  During the time you allude to, there will be some local events such as a series of races in Pinellas Park and the Squiggy Classic which is also in the Tampa Bay Area.  We can talk about it.

Topic : A cycling book authored by Rosie Ray & myself now available

Rosie Ray and myself have written a new cycling book entitled, "From Broken Neck to Broken Records, a Masters Cyclist's Guide to Winning."  It is available on Amazon.com where you can find the details or on the book's own website at www.brokennecktobrokenrecords.com

The first part of the book deals with me breaking my neck at a time trial race in Gainesville on October 30th, 2005, and my comeback to win 11 state cycling championships and breaking the state records for the 5, 10 & 20K time trial.

The second half deals with planning, training, racing, nutrition, favorite cycling products, tips and various anecdotes.

If you have 9 minutes to spare here is the URL to an interview I gave to WFLA,, the interviewers really made it a fun interview:

http://growingbolder.com/media/sports/cycling/sandy-scott-957.html#content_tabs

I'm excited to report that sales have been brisk even though it has been out for only a week.  Also, within the next 6 weeks, Marc Middleton of the Growing Bolder Network in Orlando will be doing a half hour TV segment on me for the Orlando Market.

If you decide to purchase the book, I hope you love it!

Definitely enjoying the extra speed.  I've been riding a fixie for a couple years now and am really happy I made the transition to a geared bike (although I do still ride the fixie as well).

By the way, and this could probably be a topic for another conversation, I am interested in getting into racing and am looking to find 1 or 2 races sometime toward the middle to end of next year to start training for.  Do you have any suggestions for a good race or two for a beginner?

Thanks in advance.

Topic : road Bike rental in St. Pete

Hi,

I live in Canada and will be travelling in St. Petersburg in February. I was wondering if there were bike shops down there where I could rent a road bike for a week. I did rent a bike at North east cycles in the past years but for some unknown reason the prices announced on their web site went up from 150 to 250 per week and I was asking myself if there were any other bike shops that also rent road bikes.

Thanks in advance.

Justin, that's great to hear!  Park is a super guy and an expert fitter.  I can't wait to get fitted by Park on my new Teschner time trial bike which will hopefully arrive from Australia real soon.

Boston Bill was also fitted last week - he won the fitting at the club Christmas party.  He called me that day to tell me how pleased he was with the results.

Now hold on to that fast bike until you get used to the extra speed!  :)

Great article.  I was fitted by Park up at Outspokin and it was easily the best $250 I've spent on my bike.  He spent about an hour with me, hooked up to the computer and kept making adjustments until all the angles were perfect.  He adjusted everything, even my cleat position, and now my bike really feels like it fits me perfectly.

I'm sure that most of you are aware of the importance of a good bicycle fitting to enhance one's performance and comfort on a bike.  One of the local fitting systems available is the Retul system.  I have written an article on the system for "Florida Racing Magazine," and it can be found at:

 http://www.floridaracingmagazine.com/dec-1-2009.html

My article is on pages 48-52.

As an aside, the subscription to this excellent magazine is free, and it is published in digital form twice a month.  It is state-of-the-art in its features.  I know many of you have no interest in racing, but there are many articles published of general interest to the cycling community, and the price is right!

On a personal note, I would like to share some exciting news with you.  I just received a full factory sponsorship by Teschner Bicycles out of Australia.  They will be building me one of their new, state-of-the-art Teschner 703 time trial bicycles which they hope to send me by Christmas.  You can see this gorgeous machine here:

http://www.teschnerpromotions.com/en/description_TESCHNER_703_ITU_edition

I hope to see you all at the Christmas party.  Be safe.
